So you want to build links for SEO?

Expert discussion of links for SEO

In last week's Bill and Ammon's Bogus Hangout, a great discussion of links came about. Some of things to consider before you dive into "link building":

  • Links lose value over time.
  • Links should always have value on their own (not just for SEO, find your customers).
  • There are a few types of link building. After foundational link building, it should be the last thing to worry about for a site.
  • Nofollow links may still have some value.
  • Mentions count too, especially for local SEO.
  • Ensure your links come from a relevant site as a whole, not just a relevant page (somewhat depending on the type of website).
  • Creating a useful middleman page which also links to the content you want to have found can be a good strategy.

If you start link building instead of building great content, you'll have to keep building more links to maintain the signal. As Ammon Johns has pointed out, the value of a links are lost over time because the amount of links on the web are always increasing. Also to note is that if the content is great, then the visits will last longer and show a positive signal with time on page and shares etc.
